How to troubleshoot a device that won't read a card correctly for Tap, or Inserted Chip card transaction.
Use this troubleshooting page to help fix problems with the card reader(s) on your device. These steps will help solve these problems:
- Swiping, tapping, or inserting a card immediately gives an error message
- Swiping, tapping, or inserting a card does nothing at all
- Card doesn't fit inside the EMV or Stripe reader
- "Card Read Error"
Solution:
If you're still having a problem with your card reader after trying these steps, or if you need help with troubleshooting your device, you can contact Customer Service any time.
- Contactless Only: How big is the transaction?
- If you have noticed your Contactless transactions are failing only when processing larger transactions, this may be why.
- Retry the Transaction
- If this is the first time this has happened, try the card again. Make sure you're following the prompts on the device and only using the card when you are asked for it.
- If you try to swipe, tap, or insert the card before the device is ready for it, the device may not recognize the card.
- If the device won't accept this card but other cards work, it may mean the card is defective.
- If you are having this problem with multiple cards, continue to the next steps below.
- If this is the first time this has happened, try the card again. Make sure you're following the prompts on the device and only using the card when you are asked for it.
